This page lists Latter-day Saint composers and the films they have scored. Latter-day Saint songwriters for films are listed as well. Films listed include primarily feature films, but also made-for-television movies (listed in this color) and videos (identified with a "V").

Most of the films listed are mainstream productions, but films and videos made for the Latter-day Saint market, as well as Church-commissioned films and videos, are listed as well.

Television series credits are listed in purple.

This is not a complete list, but it has all of the information we have at this time.

Leigh Harline:
[Born in Salt Lake City on 26 March 1907. He was the last of 13 children in his family. Died 10 December 1969. Took music lessons from J. Spencer Cornwall, the conductor of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Graduated from the University of Utah. Harline worked for various radio stations before joining the Walt Disney studios in 1932 as arranger and scorer. He left Disney in 1941 and free-lanced for various studios. In 1964 Harline collaborated with Crawford Gates to create music for a New York World's Fair film. Harline was commissioned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to write an orchestral work the 1947 centennial of the settlement of Utah. Greatest Latter-day Saint Composers

The best known list of top Latter-day Saint classical composers (regardless of whether they composed for film or not) was produced in 1968 by Lowell Durham. In Merrill Bradshaw's article, "Music Composition in the Church or Handsprings before the Lord" (1995), he explains:
About 27 years ago in the summer of 1968 Lowell Durham published an article in Dialogue Magazine about music in the Church, and especially about the composers in the Church. He polled some 50 people to arrive at a list of composers. He asked them to name the most important composers in the 138 years of the History of the Church to that time. He wanted to name the top 10, but there was a tie for number ten so he actually listed eleven. His listing also included nine additional composers who were mentioned, but did not make the top 11.

1. LeRoy Robertson
2. Crawford Gates
3. George Careless
4. Arthur Shepherd
5. Evan Stevens
6. B. Cecil Gates
7. Robert Cundick
8. Alexander Schreiner
9. John Tullidge
10. (tie) Leon Dallin and Merrill Bradshaw

Other Latter-day Saint classical composers mentioned by those surveyed were: Ebenezer Beesley, Joseph J. Daynes, George H. Durham, Alfred Durham, Gaylen Hatton, Leigh Harline, Cyril Jenkins, Rowan Taylor, and Jay Welch.

Greatest American Film Composers

The greatest American film composers in history (regardless of religious affiliation) include the six composers honored by the U.S. Postal Service in 1999 as part of the American Music Legends series, plus Rozsa (who had not been dead long enough to be commemorated with a stamp):

The greatest composers in world history are J.S. Bach, W. A. Mozart, Beethoven and Wagner.
